Reiki for Beginners: What to Expect in Your First Session
Lisa Lawley | OCT 17, 2024

If you’re new to Reiki, you might feel a mix of curiosity and uncertainty about what to expect in your first session. Reiki, a Japanese healing technique that promotes relaxation and stress reduction, is a gentle yet profound practice that many find transformative. Whether you’ve heard about Reiki from a friend or discovered it through your own search for balance, your first session can be a doorway to a new understanding of your own energy and well-being. Here’s what you can expect.
What Is Reiki?
Before we dive into what happens during a session, it’s helpful to understand what Reiki is. Reiki is a form of energy healing that works by channeling universal life force energy through the practitioner’s hands into the recipient’s body. This energy helps to clear blockages, balance chakras, and support the body’s natural ability to heal itself. It’s non-invasive, meaning there’s no physical manipulation or massage involved—just gentle touch or no touch at all.
Preparing for Your First Reiki Session
You don’t need to do much to prepare for your first Reiki session, but here are a few tips to help you get the most out of the experience:
During the Session: What to Expect
At the time of your Reiki session, your practitioner will start with a brief chat to understand your needs and intentions. This is a great time to share any specific areas of concern, whether they’re physical, emotional, or spiritual.
The Setting: Turquoise Sanctuary sessions are done remotely, so you will be in the comfort of your own home. We do not use Zoom or other conferencing tools to give you privacy. Get comfortable where you won't be disturbed.
The Process: During the session, your practitioner will visualize directing energy through different areas of your body. You may feel warmth, tingling, or even a gentle pulsating sensation during the session. Some people experience deep relaxation, while others may have an emotional release. Each experience is unique, and there’s no right or wrong way to feel.
Duration: Turquoise Sanctuary Reiki sessions are generally about an hour in length. We encourage clients to allow for more time to rest and integrate the healing energy from the session. If you fall asleep, that is perfectly okay as your body needed rest. It is suggested that you allow at least 90 minutes total for your session and some time to rest afterwards before doing anything else.
After the Session: What Comes Next?
After your session, it’s important to take some time to reorient yourself before getting up. Your practitioner will relay any notes from the session. You may choose to share some of your experiences with the practitioner, but this is not required. Give yourself time to process the session.
Immediate Effects: Many people feel calm, centered, and relaxed immediately after a session. Some might feel a bit lightheaded or emotional, which is perfectly normal as your body adjusts to the energy shift.
Long-Term Benefits: Reiki’s benefits can continue long after your session. You might notice improved sleep, reduced stress, and a greater sense of overall well-being in the days that follow. It’s also common to experience subtle shifts in how you respond to challenges and interact with others.
Your first Reiki session is an opportunity to explore a new dimension of self-care and healing. Whether you leave feeling deeply relaxed or subtly rejuvenated, Reiki offers a gentle yet powerful way to support your mind, body, and spirit. Remember, every session is unique, just like your journey with Reiki. Keep an open heart, and let the energy guide you where you need to go.
