Kuan Yin & The Path of Compassion
Lisa Lawley | MAR 25, 2025
In Buddhist tradition, Kuan Yin is known as "She Who Hears the Cries of the World." She is a bodhisattva—a being of enlightenment—who, rather than ascending into Buddhahood, chose to remain in this realm to offer mercy, healing, and deep, unwavering compassion.
Her presence is a reminder that compassion begins within. That we cannot truly offer love and care to others if we do not first extend it to ourselves.
There is a misconception that compassion means giving endlessly, even at the expense of ourselves. But Kuan Yin teaches something different. True compassion is not about depletion—it is about balance. It is the ability to hold space without absorbing, to offer love without losing ourselves.
She is often depicted standing upon a lotus, symbolizing resilience and beauty rising from the mud. In her hands, she holds a vessel of healing water—a source of restoration and renewal. Her sacred mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, translates loosely to The jewel is in the lotus—a reminder that even in life’s challenges, wisdom and compassion are already within us, waiting to bloom.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, if self-judgment has crept in, or if you struggle to hold healthy boundaries while still being present for others, you can call upon Kuan Yin.
Her message is clear: You, too, are worthy of the same grace you offer to others.
If this speaks to your heart, I invite you to join us for our next Lunar Women’s Circle, where we continue exploring themes of self-compassion, wisdom, and healing. Learn more and register here:
